I was lucky enough to catch a screening of the new Sofia Coppola film, SOMEWHERE, yesterday. We talked about it a little while ago and posted the trailer here. Have a look for a reminder.
It's a quiet film about a hard living actor, played perfectly by Stephen Dorff, who is shacked up in the Chateau marmont. I get the feeling, this story may not be too far from the real Dorff story. Elle Fanning, little sister of Dakota, plays his daughter and is brilliant for this role, very real and not overacted or forced at all. The way Coppola films, at times makes this film uncomfortable to watch, long takes without edit, but it seems there is a purpose and we can feel what Dorff is feeling. It's kind of a heartbreaking film but without the emotion (if this makes any sense). Do we pity this character or feel sorry for him? No, we don't, but there is such a realness, that we feel what he is feeling.
This film won Venice, which is a big call. It's not 'Lost in Translation', and it won't be for everyone, but if you are a little bit fascinated by life as a Hollywood star living in LA, then this is a great insight.
No release date in Australia as yet. will let you know when i do.
I am really looking forward to seeing this one ... I always thought Stephen was hot. Does he still look hot in this?
ReplyDeleteGreat review as always. This is definitely worth watching just to see Dorff again.
