I woke up this morning with the sinking feeling that the world no longer has james Freud walking around in it. He was quite clearly a tortured soul but he was a mischievous one! I have followed the Models for a long time, one of the highlights probably being the Australian Made concert of January 1987 in which they toured with INXS, Jimmy Barnes, The Divinyls etc.
Most recently, my two besties and I ventured to the Prince of Wales for a one off Models reunion gig in 2008. James was joined on stage by both of his sons, which was just gorgeous to watch. We also saw him at an Absolutely 80's gig alongside Brian Mannix and Scott Carne, which clearly he was doing to pay the bills. he had fun, but you could see his heart wasn't in it! My friend Kez, pictured below, had the biggest crush on him, and can testify that the times she met him, he was gorgeous. So we haven't seen him play live so much in recent times, but have followed his ventures as band manager of 'Attack of the Mannequins' his sons' band with interest as a friend on Facebook. He seemed so proud of his boys.
His books "I am the voice left from drinking' and ' I am the voice left from Rehab' both give an amzing and entertaining insight into the life of an alcoholic musician, he wrote about it in graphic detail and he seemed like he may have turned a corner, but still, the disease got the better of him.
I will probably listen to my CD of OUT OF MIND OUT OF SIGHT all weekend (originally on vinyl) and i will remember you fondly James Freud.
RIP gorgeous man.
Watch the footage at the beginning of this tribute, two of the most talented beautiful boys in Aussie music, both gone too early...............
That video of James doing Michael is hysterical!! Very funny... Those two beautiful boys are together again - running amuk somewhere!!!!
