Oscar Nominations

Oh, the disappointment of waking up and finding out that Ryan had missed out on an Oscar nomination. It's always tough, as only five can make it in, and even if he did make it in, the chances of him winning would be slim in a tough field, but at least we would get some decent red carpet action. We now need to put all of our hopes into the Oscar producers giving him a shot at presenting.

Anyway, about the nominations....not too many surprises, apart from Ryan, whose place in the 5 would appear to have been taken by Javier Bardem for BIUTIFUL, which I haven't seen, so am unable to talk objectively about whether his performance surpassed that of Ryan's in BLUE VALENTINE (doubtful!). Others in this category are Colin Firth in KINGS SPEECH, whom I would tip to take this one out, James Franco in 127 HOURS, (is it awkward for the host to win an award or good tv??), Jeff Bridges in TRUE GRIT, and Jesse Eienberg in THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

The ladies category includes the delightful Michelle Williams for BLUE VALENTINE, sadly don't think it will be her year but wouldn't it be nice and how excellent if her and Ryan decided to out themselves as a couple on the red carpet! Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right”, Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole”, Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter's Bone” and  Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”.  Am thinking it's probably Nat's year, and she is everywhere at the moment which helps remind the voters who she is! Nic won't get it but at least Cool Rider will get some Keith action on the red carpet. Jennifer is meant to be amzing in Winter's Bone, unfortunately I haven't caught that one yet, and Annette does have a lot of voting friends, but my money's on Nat!

Supporting actor nominations are
* Christian Bale in “The Fighter”
* John Hawkes in “Winter's Bone”
* Jeremy Renner in “The Town”
* Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”
* Geoffrey Rush in “The King's Speech”

Feels like Christian Bale is on a roll. He is great as 'Dickie' but not so sure about his popularity in Hollywood! Would be ace if Geoffrey Rush won. He is brilliant in King's Speech and any other year this award would be his! Would have liked to see Andrew Garfield for THE SOCIAL NETWORK, I really liked his performance in that.
Supporting Actress nominations are:
* Amy Adams in “The Fighter”
* Helena Bonham Carter in “The King's Speech”
* Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”
* Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit”
* Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom”

How exciting for Jacki Weaver to have been nominated. I'm so excited for her. Not sure enough people would have seen her performance for her to be a winner but congrats for making it Jacki! This is a fairly tight race. Melissa Leo's transformation into Alice in The Fighter is amazing, but for me, it was Amy Adams who shone in that film. Hailee is meant to be amazing in TRUE GRIT which I will hopefully catch in the next couple of days and can let you know after that! And how lucky we are that Helena will have a presence on the red carpet! JOY!

Best picture nominations are:

* “Black Swan”
* “The Fighter”
* “Inception”
* “The Kids Are All Right”
* “The King's Speech”
* “127 Hours”
* “The Social Network”
* “Toy Story 3”
* “True Grit”
* “Winter's Bone"

It would appear to be a 2 horse race between THE KINGS SPEECH and THE SOCIAL NETWORK. The safe bet would probably be THE SOCIAL NETWORK, but the KINGS SPEECH folk are making a late charge and it is such a superb film that they might just get there!

Check out the full list of nominations here.

Can't wait..........

Wow that was quick - great overview K - I am surprised though that Sharni Vinson didn't get a nod for Step Up 3D.

How can blue valentine not be in the line up for best picture? It's definitely the best picture I've seen this year. And I'm with you K , Ryan deserved a nomination too. so happy for Michelle.
