Chloe (Clark's best friend and secret keeper) and Whitney (Lana Lang's first boyfriend) were created specifically for the show (they were never mentioned in the Superman comics). However, in 2003, DC Comics announced that Chloe would be introduced into the Superman comics.
I can only imagine how exciting that must have been for the writers and creators of the character. It turns out we may still have to wait a while to see Chloe grace the comics.
Chloe's journey is a fascinating one.
Chloe Sullivan, played by Allison Mack, is one of Smallville’s most popular characters, if not THE most popular if fansites are to be believed. She was created as a Lois Lane archetype and the character has unusually taken on a life of her own, always remaining a key part of the show despite being the first name on everyone’s list whenever the producers announce they’re going to kill someone off.

It’s odd, as well, because so many regulars – who form an important part of the Superman mythos, like Lana and Lex – have left the show in the meantime. Not Chloe, though. She’s not on the show now to fulfill her original purpose as a Lois Lane stand-in. The show has had Lois Lane for a long time – Chloe’s there because fans want her there. Nice work Chloe (and massive kudos to Allison Mack)
