Teen Wolf - 2011 style

Forget almost everything you know or remember of 1985's Teen Wolf.  The remake still revolves around a 16 year old boy who, after being mysteriously bitten finds himself developing into a werewolf - but don't expect the light breezy nature of the original.  In the vein of Vampire Diaries, this version is a lot darker and a hell of a lot sexier.
Tyler Posey, who was destined to crop up on our screens again sooner or later is perfectly cast as the slightly dorky Scott McCall, the Teen Wolf.  (You may remember Tyler as the son in Maid In Manhattan, he also starred in Brothers and Sisters, Smallville, and Collateral Damage.)  Not only is Tyler an accomplished actor who immediately engages, but for a 16 year old he is looking rather 'Taylor Lautner'.  No 16 year old should be ripped like that! Anyway....
This version does not have the humour inherent in the original but neither should it - only Michael J Fox can pull that off.  What this does have is a fabulous Australian director,  Russell Mulcahy, who says he prefers to call it a reinvention of the Michael J Fox film, rather than a remake.
"MTV talked about reinventing it and giving it a modern twist and heading more in the direction of The Lost Boys from the 1980s,"

I think they have achieved their aim, with the bones of the story being the same but the details and the feel of the show being completely different.  Aside from Tyler the cast is relatively unknown which makes it refreshing (and can I also say they are a lot more appealing than the Twilight cast.)  The special effects aren't perfect but it definitely serves up a scare or three with enough High School angst thrown in to keep you caring about the characters.
Give it a go - you might just love it!
(I did)

It airs here in Australia tonight at 9.30 on Channel 7
