got wood???

Oh me, oh my, things down at the CW are certainly steaming up. Check out this latest ad for THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

BEGINNERS - trailer

When Ewan McGregor is good, he is a delight to watch. I think this film could be quite lovely.

The official synopsis

From writer/director Mike Mills comes a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. -Beginners- imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver (Ewan McGregor). Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna (Melanie Laurent of Inglourious Basterds) only months after his father Hal (Academy Award nominee Christopher Plummer) has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who following 44 years of marriage came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hals new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than theyd ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

Limitless - trailer

This looks kinda interesting. Bradley Cooper and Abbie Cornish star in LIMITLESS about a tablet that can give you superhuman powers, but not in the superman way. Check out the trailer.

never enough Sandy Cohen........

Do you think this is when Megan Fox first fell in love?

TRUE GRIT - REVIEW

This is above all, a great adventure story, set in the western style! The 'western' is not necessarily a genre I search for, and indeed, I have never seen the 1969 version of TRUE GRIT starring John Wayne, but The Coen brothers have gone back to the original novel, not the screenplay, and started afresh. They have created a brilliant character driven, adventurous, humourous western.

"Following the murder of her father by hired hand Tom Chaney, 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross sets out to capture the killer. To aid her, she hires the toughest U.S. marshal she can find, a man with "true grit," Reuben J. "Rooster" Cogburn. Mattie insists on accompanying Cogburn, whose drinking, sloth, and generally reprobate character do not augment her faith in him. Against his wishes, she joins him in his trek into the Indian Nations in search of Chaney. They are joined by Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who wants Chaney for his own purposes. The unlikely trio find danger and surprises on the journey, and each has his or her "grit" tested." from IMDB

The acting is sublime, with Hailee Steinfield an absolute standout and most deserving of her supporting actress Oscar nomination. She shares the screen with Jeff Bridges, who plays Rooster Cogburn, the 'tough' US Marshall, and although, his drunken, western drawl is often hard to understand, he plays the role to perfection. He and the Coens have not worked together since 'The Big Lebowski'. My lovely Matt plays the Texas Ranger who joins the search for the criminal, and he also ends up with a difficulty speaking,(a technique he achieved by tying his daughter's hairband around his tongue) but is as always, amazing (biased, moi???) The supporting cast is led by Josh Brolin, who seems to be a Coen brothers favourite these days, Barry Pepper, who is barely recognisable, and Dakin Matthews, whom we know so well from The Gilmore Girls where he played Rory's principal!

It's definitely deserving of its 10 Oscar nominations. You may not necessarily think that this would be the sort of film you would like, or normally go to, but you should. It's a ripper yarn, not in the usual quirky Coen way, but in a really great entertaining way! Go see it!!

10 Days of Zac and Baby V - Day 2

Zac Efron was spotted visiting Vanessa Hudgens on the set of her movie “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” which is currently filming in North Carolina. The two were not only spotted going to dinner together two nights in a row, but were also reportedly staying in the same hotel room!! Which brings us very nicely to Day 2 of our retrospective on these two love birds.

After meeting and falling for each other on the set of High School Musical, Zac and Vanessa were then faced with a totally unexpected fan frenzy when the tele movie touched the hearts of tweens (and their Mums) everywhere.
The press loved them and their lives became a whirlwind round of public appearences which they handled with an amazing amount of maturity all the while supporting each other.

Next up - HSM 2 - can they handle the hype and still stay together?  We shall see ...tomorrow.

Could it Be True?

I just read this on an audition website!

High School Musical 4 (titled High School Musical: East Meets West) is scheduled to begin filming soon via Salty Pictures who were responsible for HSM  and HSM2!

The film will be a Disney Channel Original Movie and not released in theaters.
All Disney Channel auditions for lead roles and supporting roles have yet to be announced, as well as all of the Disney Channel dancers and extras.

High School Musical 4 will revolve around “a classic love triangle” set against a new generation of East High Wildcats and their crosstown rivals, the West High Knights!

I am worried this is just another HSM rumour although Jeffery Hornaday, whose choreography credits include Flashdance, is said to be the director/choreographer and it does indeed say that on his Wikipedia site!  Intriguing - I'm hopeful but not convinced of the validity of this story.

10 DAYS OF ZAC & BABY V - Day 1

Great idea hey?  I think we need to celebrate the possibility that these two have realised they are better together than solo.  Let us embrace the joy that is 'Zanessa' and mark this joyous occasion with a series of pictures documenting their time together.  Are you with me??  Yes?? Say it louder!

Woo Hoo!  Let's start at the very beginning - Zac and Vanessa met when they auditioned for the lead roles in HSM back in 2005.
The world was introduced to Troy and Gabriella and they discovered the chemistry that was palpable in the auditions was in fact undeniable and 'sigh' Zanessa was born.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's installment.

And in further relationship news...

Sam Worthington has broken up with Natalie Marks, the Aussie receptionist/publicist he has been seeing for 3 years. And apparently not dealing so well. Seen slamming his fist into a wall at the G'day LA function when he didn't get his own way, then continuing his rant once inside the function. A little embarassing for the aussie hot bogan, I think!!!

Apparently, so back together! BLAH!

BURLESQUE - the review

This film is no GLITTER, but it is cliched and campy but in a good way!

The story goes, poor little orphaned Ali from the middle of nowhere mid america, finds her way to LA where she hopes to make it as a singer. She stumbles across the burlesque club, where she parts with $20 to get in( if I was that poor and in her shoes, I doubt I would have paid $20 bucks to get into a club) and by the end of the night has a job as a waitress in the club. She falls in love the the place, makes some friends and some enemies, and eventually finds her way onto the stage where her amazing voice is dicscovered and lots of people come to see her and she saves the club from being torn down!!! (trust me this is no spoiler, no shocks or surprises in this one!)

Ali is of course played quite annoyingly by Christina Aguilera, probably the main downfall of the film! She can sing, but she can't act, and at all times, I have no sympathy for her character. The rest of the cast are quite fun. Kristen Bell, playing the miffed has been dancer, Julianne Hough as the friendly dancer, a very 'hot' Cam Gigandet as the love interest, Dianna Agron for about 2 minutes onscreen, Stanley Tucci, who is always brilliant, Eric Dane, Peter Gallagher (our fave Sandy Cohen) and Cher who you can't not look at everytime she is onscreen. Not because she is so good, just because she is Cher!

Funnily, Cher has 2 solos in the film, and neither is really appropriate to the storyline, almost as though she insisted that they be there, so they just poked them in where they could!!! Although one of these songs did win a golden globe for best original song!

The dancing is fun and lively, the story is just ok. Cam Gigandet standing in a doorway with just his pyjama pants on, worth the ticket price!!!

We were always going to check this one out!! It was lots of fun, except for Christina Aguliera. How could one person be so annoying? We knew what to expect and weren't disappointed! So if campy, cliched musical is your thing, go see it!!!

THE FIGHTER Review

The FIGHTER is a good film! I had gone in with fairly high expectations, as people all around me were claiming amazing things about it, 89% on rotten tomatoes. I liked it, without loving it!

It's a boxing film, based on a true story. Not my favourite sport or film genre, but the film is of course not just about the boxing. It's essentially a family drama set in the working class suburb of Lowell Massachusetts, not far from Wahlberg's own upbringing, about the 'against all odds' chances of an ordinary bloke. Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg) is a boxer, trained by his ex boxer, crack addicted, criminal brother Dickie (Christian Bale) and managed by his overbearing, outspoken bogan mother Alice (Melissa Leo). He is loyal to them when in fact they are not managing his career at all well, setting him up in fights where he is destined to lose. Until he meets Charlene, played by Amy Adams. she sees his potential and right through his selfish loserish family and convinces him to move in other directions, putting her at odds with the family. You can guess how it all ends, I'm sure, no real surprises!

Christian Bale is currently getting much of the accolades for his performance of Dickie, but for me, and to his credit Christian Bale did mention this in his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, that it is the strength of Mark's quieter performance that lets his shine. And again, Melissa Leo is the one winning awards for her transformation into the scary Alice, it is Amy Adams performance that I preferred.

Christian's performance as Dickie is kinda creepy, although no doubt spot on, when you get a glimpse of the real Dickie at the end of the film. He is a method actor, and I'm betting that his 'dickie' act would have become quite annoying by the end of the shoot! The most uncomfortable I felt whilst watching the film , and the bit that probably detracted from my loving this film, was the sisters. There were 7 sisters, all of whom had the roughest, ugliest, most bogan heads I've ever seen onscreen. They moved in a pack and seemed to do nothing except bitch and moan. Their presence freaked me out to be honest. I have since read that one of them was played by Conan O'brien's sister!!!

The film is directed by David O Russell who has also done The Three Kings (which I absolutely loved) and I Heart Huckabees both with Mark Wahlberg. It was originally to be directed by Darren Aronofsky, but he left the project to do BLACK SWAN. Mark was involved from the beginning and trained constantly for 4 years while the project waited to get the greenlight! Hard work!!! Dickie was originally to be played by Brad Pitt and then Matt Damon, both who had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts.

The story is somewhat predictable, but the performances are definitely worth watching, just make sure to close your eyes every time the 'sisters' hit the screen!!! If you like a good fight film, or you love an award winning performance, go see it!

The sisters

Oscar Nominations

Oh, the disappointment of waking up and finding out that Ryan had missed out on an Oscar nomination. It's always tough, as only five can make it in, and even if he did make it in, the chances of him winning would be slim in a tough field, but at least we would get some decent red carpet action. We now need to put all of our hopes into the Oscar producers giving him a shot at presenting.

Anyway, about the nominations....not too many surprises, apart from Ryan, whose place in the 5 would appear to have been taken by Javier Bardem for BIUTIFUL, which I haven't seen, so am unable to talk objectively about whether his performance surpassed that of Ryan's in BLUE VALENTINE (doubtful!). Others in this category are Colin Firth in KINGS SPEECH, whom I would tip to take this one out, James Franco in 127 HOURS, (is it awkward for the host to win an award or good tv??), Jeff Bridges in TRUE GRIT, and Jesse Eienberg in THE SOCIAL NETWORK.

The ladies category includes the delightful Michelle Williams for BLUE VALENTINE, sadly don't think it will be her year but wouldn't it be nice and how excellent if her and Ryan decided to out themselves as a couple on the red carpet! Annette Bening in “The Kids Are All Right”, Nicole Kidman in “Rabbit Hole”, Jennifer Lawrence in “Winter's Bone” and  Natalie Portman in “Black Swan”.  Am thinking it's probably Nat's year, and she is everywhere at the moment which helps remind the voters who she is! Nic won't get it but at least Cool Rider will get some Keith action on the red carpet. Jennifer is meant to be amzing in Winter's Bone, unfortunately I haven't caught that one yet, and Annette does have a lot of voting friends, but my money's on Nat!

Supporting actor nominations are
* Christian Bale in “The Fighter”
* John Hawkes in “Winter's Bone”
* Jeremy Renner in “The Town”
* Mark Ruffalo in “The Kids Are All Right”
* Geoffrey Rush in “The King's Speech”

Feels like Christian Bale is on a roll. He is great as 'Dickie' but not so sure about his popularity in Hollywood! Would be ace if Geoffrey Rush won. He is brilliant in King's Speech and any other year this award would be his! Would have liked to see Andrew Garfield for THE SOCIAL NETWORK, I really liked his performance in that.
Supporting Actress nominations are:
* Amy Adams in “The Fighter”
* Helena Bonham Carter in “The King's Speech”
* Melissa Leo in “The Fighter”
* Hailee Steinfeld in “True Grit”
* Jacki Weaver in “Animal Kingdom”

How exciting for Jacki Weaver to have been nominated. I'm so excited for her. Not sure enough people would have seen her performance for her to be a winner but congrats for making it Jacki! This is a fairly tight race. Melissa Leo's transformation into Alice in The Fighter is amazing, but for me, it was Amy Adams who shone in that film. Hailee is meant to be amazing in TRUE GRIT which I will hopefully catch in the next couple of days and can let you know after that! And how lucky we are that Helena will have a presence on the red carpet! JOY!

Best picture nominations are:

* “Black Swan”
* “The Fighter”
* “Inception”
* “The Kids Are All Right”
* “The King's Speech”
* “127 Hours”
* “The Social Network”
* “Toy Story 3”
* “True Grit”
* “Winter's Bone"

It would appear to be a 2 horse race between THE KINGS SPEECH and THE SOCIAL NETWORK. The safe bet would probably be THE SOCIAL NETWORK, but the KINGS SPEECH folk are making a late charge and it is such a superb film that they might just get there!

Check out the full list of nominations here.

Can't wait..........

Guess Who - The Answer

One To Watch - Rafi Gavron

Do you know the feeling when you are watching a show or a movie and instead of watching the leads, who are supposed to have your attention, you find your self drawn to one of the supporting cast?  One of the earlier times this happened to me was during 'She's All That' and I found myself drawn to the 'best friend', a young Paul Walker who I could not tear my eyes away from.  They have that indefinable something that lights up the screen whenever they appear.  I also call this the 'Puck' effect.

Lately I have been watching the CW show 'Life Unexpected' and every episode I find myself drawn to one of the supporting cast.  The character of  'Bug'  is played by Rafi Gavron and I think he is definitely one to keep an eye on.

In Life Unexpected Rafi plays the main character, Luxe's, boyfriend - the guy from the wrong side of the tracks who effectively is her 'family' as she navigates her way through the foster system.

I thought I'd see what else Rafi has been up to - He is English and his big break came when he was cast in 'Breaking And Entering' for which he was nominated at the British Independent Film Awards for Most Promising Newcomer.  He followed this up with roles in Inkheart and Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist.  Rafi has also had roles on TV in Rome, 24 and now Life Unexpected.

Interestingly Rafi's best mate is none other than another Englishman made good on US TV - Ed Westwick!

I look forward to seeing what Rafi does with himself next.

Rafi with co-star Shiri Appleby

Oscars Are Around The Corner....

Razzies

It's that time of year again - no not the Oscars - it's The Golden Rasberry Awards.  Where the Oscars celebrates the best of the film industry, The Razzies celebrates the worst.  I thought we'd take a look at who's up for an award this year and I reckon if I was affiliated with Twilight I wouldn't be all that excited about the night.  They received 9 nominations this year which must be depressing and embarrassing.

Martha Marcy May Marlene

Martha Marcy May Marlene tells the story of Martha (Elizabeth Olsen), a woman who escapes from a cult in rural New York and tries to reintegrate into a normal life with her sister, Lucy (Sarah Paulson). Lucy brings Martha to her Connecticut vacation home, where she and her husband Adam (Hugh Dancy) are trying to enjoy a few days away from their regular lives in the city. Martha constantly experiences chilling flashbacks and begins to lose her grip on reality. As the days pass and Martha’s behavior becomes more and more erratic, it becomes clear that her time away from home may have had far more effects on her than initially believed.

One sundance reviewer had this to say about the film -

'There are few movies that fill me with so much discomfort that I can’t wait to leave the theater, even while I’m watching them. Martha Marcy May Marlene, which premiered yesterday at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, is one of those films, a portrait of cult brainwashing that is so discomfiting, I would have walked out if I wasn’t so transfixed by the tremendous filmmaking on display.

As far as I’m concerned, Olsen’s performance here is a tour de force, full of depth and complexity. Olsen’s Martha displays deep insecurity, painful ambivalence, and a stunning amorality that is haunting to see in a fellow human being.

Martha Marcy May Marlene is an intense and unforgettable directorial debut. I just don’t know if I’ll ever want to see it again.'

Wow - Black Swan scared the pants off me so I don't know how I'll go with this one although I am completely intrigued.  I think I should force myself if only to gaze at Hugh Dancy for a while!

Spotted At Sundance - No1

Can you work out who this is?  She's definitely one to keep on our radar as I'm tipping she has a very bright future ahead of her.  She is a younger sibling of a show biz family and she is in Sundance to promote her movie ' Martha Marcy May Marlene' - and a 2nd film - 'The Silent House', a horror adapted from the book of the same name.  She is Elizabeth Olsen, the youngest in the Olsen tribe made famous by Mary-Kate and Ashley!

Elizabeth is garnering great reviews for both films with the critic at Cinema Blend having this to say - 'Olsen isn't just the star of Silent House but the complete life force; her wide, expressive face fills nearly every frame, her voice and pulse building the film's rhythm and drive.'

Well done Elizabeth - we'll be seeing her soon with Chace Crawford in 'Peace Love and Misunderstanding which we shared with you in an earlier post.

Guess Who?

Which of these gorgeous young ladies has only ever kissed three boys in her real life?  Amazing but true - obviously someone needs to get out more!

Tell us who you think it is and I'll let you know tomorrow.

Thanks Teen.com

Renesmee

BLUE VALENTINE

Ok, so I screened it for a second time, and loved it , maybe even a little bit more than the first. The first viewing, the film was so raw and in your face, the second allowed for a genuine appreciation of the performances and the realities of what is happening for these two people onscreen.

It also allowed for me to pick up on a couple of lines I had missed on the first time around. My fave being, (and this is truly for those fans of 80's and early 90's tv, -i'm looking at you Cool Rider)when Dean (Ryan) and Cindy(michelle) have just stopped at the liquor store while on their way to the fantasy hotel, and Cindy says to Dean, "you'll never guess who i ran into at the liquor store?" and Dean says "Richard Grieco'?. GOLD!!! I know that much of this film was improvised, and i am intrigued to know who came up with that line!!! I can feel a Richard Grieco post coming on......

Do you love karl???

Well, you know i do!!! Get voting! let's get a drunk Karl acceptance speech happening!

Beastly

I'm not ashamed of the fact that I can not wait for this film to finally be released.

Ted's Got The Goss

Fashion Friday

This week the spotlight is on Miss Selena Gomez.  For those of you who are thinking - 'WHO??' here's a bit of background...

Selena is part of the Disney stable and got her acting break at age seven on the Barney & Friends show.  She was a series regular on Hannah Montana and currently stars in The Wizards of Waverley Place for Disney Channel.  Selena played the lead in the Cinderella Story sequel and also starred opposite her best friend, Demi Lovato in 'Princess Protection Project'.  Selena also has a successful music career with her band and is the youngest ever ambassador for UNICEF.

I must admit I enjoy Selena as an actress, which shouldn't surprise you but I have also come to realise that this young lady has a lovely sense of style, which also happens to be age appropriate!(she is 19)  See what you think.

Zac May Have Had A Change of Heart

The rumours of Zac and Vanessa getting back together are gaining ground!  Zac has been seen at her place which admittedly could be innocent, then came the news that they had partied the night away together Los Angeles nightclub Eden where they were spotted by various people holding hands and kissing!
Now comes the news that Zac spent most of the Golden Globes after party texting Baby V and headed straight over there after the party!!!
Well, well, well!  We'll just have to wait and see.
The most persistent rumour is that although Zac ended the relationship, it is now Vanessa who is in the drivers seat with Zac keen to rekindle.
I know you may not agree but I'd be thrilled to see them back together, but then I'm a sucker for first love. (Besides the alternatives aren't fabulous - Rumor Willis - point made)
