Young Adult - film review

You know that warm fuzzy feeling you got after watching Juno, the previous film from writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman, well, don't expect that when you watch YOUNG ADULT.

This film is not pretending to be a Disney happy ending, feelgood film, and in fact, Charlize Theron's self absorbed Mavis is barely likable throughout the film. However, the story does deliver in a darkly comedic way. Mavis, although mostly despicable, is absolutely absorbing. Viewers will recognise traits in her character in others they have known through their lives. Her character, a writer of teen literature, returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempts to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart.

My concerns were mainly selfish also, would I relate too well with the Mavis character and her attempts at prolonging adolescence? Similar age group, loves young adult fiction (wannabe writer of it right here!), can't let go of the past (remember I was the one that went to see Vengaboys last week!!), still have a crush on my high school boyfriend etc and then while I was watching the film there were another couple of alarming similarities, like her love of diet coke and the golf she drove in the 90's (same as me!) Anyway, don't think I will spend too much time dwelling on all of that........

Patton Oswalt, who plays Matt, a character also stuck in a not so happy life dwelling on his high school days but for very different reasons, was great in this role. He is a character that deserves our sympathy and we wish more for him than we know he will end up receiving.

And special mention to Patrick Wilson, who mostly always plays the nice guy, does it well and is a bit of a spunk. (check out his new tv series on Ch 10 'A Gifted Man' it's not too bad)

so, will you like this film? It's bleak but there are laugh out loud moments and it is a great study of human behaviour. So, if you don't need to be uplifted, and you like your films a little dark, then I think this could be for you.

House of Lies

I can watch Kristen Bell for hours on end so this morning I have been entertaining myself with webisodes of her new show - 'House of Lies'.  It's a show I am greatly looking forward to and wouldn't you know it - there is another brilliant Australian in the cast.  The very funny Josh Lawson plays Doug, along with Kristen, Don Cheadle and Ben Schwartz.

Just loving this shot..

One of my SAG faves....

And Rose Byrne...not sure if she is really brave or really stupid. For me, I think that it is the hair that doesn't suit her....

Missed opportunity

You may or may not know, but Colin Farrell heads up my DF list. I am a sad lady this evening after just having learned that I have missed a massive opportunity. I might be late to hear this news, but it doesn't make it any easier to digest. Colin Farrell lived in australia for 2 years in the mid 90's. Two whole freaking years, young and available......................aaaaaaarrrrggghhhhhhh

Gos in Bangers

As we know, Ryan is currently in Bangkok preparing to shoot his next film with Nicolas Winding Refn, his Danish DRIVE director, and here he is at a local film festival. Looking mighty fine, may I add.

Says it all really........

Joseph Sings 'Hey Jude'

We love a bit of J.G.L. and even more so when he is singing!  Here is some footage fresh from the Sundance Film Festival of Joseph Gordon Levitt singing the Beatles 'Hey Jude' .  Enjoy.

LOCKOUT

While we're talking about gifted Australians flying the flag - Check out the trailer for the sci-fi/action movie ‘Lockout’, which stars Guy Pearce as a condemned man sent to rescue the president’s daughter from an overrun space prison.

Guy stars in the film as a man wrongly convicted of conspiracy and espionage, who is offered his freedom in exchange for a big task: break into an orbital prison that has been overrun by inmates, in order to rescue the president’s daughter (Maggie Grace) sounds like a good old school action movie to me..

Get Well Demi

No one comes out of a marriage break up unscathed and unfortunately this is true for Demi Moore.
Demi was rushed to hospital in LA on Monday night. Demi's people say she is staying at the hospital to seek "further professional assistance" to treat exhaustion and deal with substance abuse issues.  Our best wishes go to Demi with hopes that she is back on track soon.

BEFORE SUNSET sequel

From the mouth of Ethan Hawke..........

"All of three of us [Hawke, Delpy, and director Richard Linklater] have been having similar feelings that we’re ready to revisit those characters. There’s nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again, so we’re really started thinking that would be a good thing to do. We’re going to try write it this year.”

Excited......

David Wooderson makes a return.....

VENGABOYS review

We went, because we thought it might be a little bit of fun, but we were very wrong......it was a whole lot of fun! And you all thought we were stuck in the 80's! We were rocking the 90's on wednesday night at the Corner Hotel.

The night started with a DJ who played in-between sets pumping out tracks like Dr Jones, Mr Vain, What is Love, and many other songs whose names have momentarily left my brain, but at the time, I knew every single word, as did the rest of the crowd. Next up, THE HERBS, a Spice Girls cover band. Not just a few chicks dressed up as Baby and Sporty etc, but blokes with cool twists on Spice Girls originals. Lots of fun!

AND THEN, we were hit by the Venga bus. Seriously felt like we were hit. The crowd went nuts, not one person in the place was still. Every person knew all the words and were dancing to hits like BOOM BOOM BOOM, the Venga Bus, We Like to Party, etc. The costumes and dance moves onstage were amazing and they were hilarious with their strictly cheesy sleazy eurotrash vibes!

So I am aware that some of you may have mocked prior to this concert, but we had the last laugh. An absolutely ripper night. Who's up for AQUA????

THE DESCENDANTS - review

I've been meaning to review this for awhile, and the reason is not because I didn't like this film, in fact, I loved it. In perfect Alexander Payne form, it is a slow drama revealing real people with real emotions. George Clooney leads a great cast but admittedly, he is the star here. George as an actor for me, never feels to be acting. I am not sure whether this is his acting or just that the roles he chooses don't require him to be anything more than who he is in real life, having said this, he is so mesmerising in this role, that you could never even contemplate another actor taking it on.

The story revolves around George's character,Matt, who is coming to terms with his wife having just had a life threatening injury, being left to look after two daughters that he admits he has only ever been a part time parent too, and then finding out that his wife was having an affair prior to her accident. (this is not spoiling the story for you) The rest of the film negotiates its way across Hawaii and Matt's emotions as he tackles everything that life throws at him. Special mention to Shailene Woodley, who plays Matt's teenage daughter. This is a lady we will need to watch in the future, she is beautiful and brilliant
In this film, even Hawaii has its moments of struggling to be the beautiful paradise we all expect it to be. George Clooney has just one a Golden Globe for this film, and the film actually won best film also, so expect more award fun for this film. If you are a fan of Alexander's previous work like SIDEWAYS and ABOUT SCHMIDT, then you will have already seen this film, if not, why not. This is a lovely, emotional, funny, ripper of a film. I know of people that have not liked it, but I feel confident that Hollow friends will really love this one. Even if you go to feel some love for George, Have you been finding him a little full of himself, smug, etc, just watch this and you will feel the love again. Vulnerable, emotional George is a delight.

Saturday night DJ

It's been awhile.....ELECTRIC PANDAS

WHAT? More divorce news

Seal and heidi Klum are to divorce! I kind of thought they were cheesy enough to stay together forever, I'm a bit sad. Maybe they just got married one too many times! Seal will now be footloose and fancy free for his time in Australia!!

Another new acquaintance

Two words...MAGIC MIKE. This film will deliver my friends. It may do so in the cheesiest, nastiest way, but it will deliver! Please start to acquaint yourselves with Matt Bomer. No doubt, there will be more info on this one to come!

Sounds interesting

Erotic tale The Grandmothers, boasting an all-star cast, will start filming in Sydney next month.

The somewhat-risqué drama, based on a short story of the same name by British author Doris Lessing, will star Naomi Watts (King Kong) and Robin Wright (Beowulf) who are two lifelong friends who fall in love with each other’s teenage sons.

The two sons will be played by The Twilight Saga's Xavier Samuel and Animal Kingdom’s James Frecheville.

Public notice to Penn Badgley

Penn Badgley you are not cool enough to pull off Zoe Kravitz as a girlfriend. Just thought I should let you know...save the heartbreak later!

I want to go on a holiday like this

Firstly, why didn't I know that Matt Damon and Chris Hemsworth are mates? Did I know and it slipped my mind? Surely this is something people like me remember. I mean, they are good mates. They are on holidays together, on boats and playing on inflatable slides. They have seen each other in bathers. These people are pretty good buddies. HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?

Secondly, I just want to be on that holiday. Like REALLY want to be on that holiday!!!!

That is all!

Rachel Bilson Raps!

There is nothing we like more than a star who is willing to take the piss out of themselves - this is exactly what Rachel Bilson has done in her latest 'Funny or Die' clip.  I am an unashamed fan of Rachel's new show Hart of Dixie and am more than aware of the bagging it often receives.  Critics have found it hard to see Rachel as a doctor and have bagged her for everything from the designer threads her character wears to her acting ability.  But it looks like Rachel is having the last laugh and good on her.
The song is hilarious and I particularly loved seeing her co-stars helping to send herself up.  Long Live Hart of Dixie!!

Here is a screen shot of the episode they are sending up in the clip - Dr Zoe Hart stitches up Wade during the Bluebell heatwave.

Jana Hits The Charts

I know there are many of our readers who are One Tree Hill fans and although I haven't written about it lately, believe me I'm still 100% committed to the guys of Tree Hill.  This morning I discovered that Jana Kramer (Alex) has released a song.  'Why Ya Wanna' and has become the most added bebut artist in the history of 'Country Aircheck' - Yes!!! She's country all the way which excites me no end.

Spotted

It's always a good day when there's been a Miley and Liam spotting.  After dinner with the family and a few friends L & M tried to leave quietly - no such luck with the ever present paps on hand.

AWKWARD!!!!!

Baby V and Josh Hutcherson are in the country to promote JOURNEY 2 something or other, anyway, this happened on the Today Show this morning. At around 3.20, Ben Fordham asked them about being a couple...OOPS!

Also not bad, but a little strange facial hair

Is this officially a dress?

Also looked nice...

But where was Ryan???????

How devastated were you when you found out that Ryan, who was nominated for 2 Golden Globes, didn't attend the awards. SHATTERED!!!!!!

Apparently he is in Thailand, earning a living! source: George Clooney

Golden Globes - Red Carpet

Here is my 2 cents worth on the fashion at this year's Golden Globes.....

Diane Lane - looking lovely and clearly with secrets to share.

Emma Stone - once again she does not disappoint.  Willing to take a risk and always pulling it off.

George Clooney/Stacy Keibler - not overly exciting but absolutely perfect.  Nice job you two.

Gerard Butler- nice head, not sure about the suit.

Guy Pearce - you are one handsome man and I'm proud that you're one of ours.  Loving the glasses and the choice of no tie - Gerard take note, this is how you do a 3 piece.

Heidi Klum - love it but I think we've seen it before....Cameron Diaz

Helen Mirren - words fail me.  You are superb.

Kate Winslet - love I think it's time to move past Mildred Pearce and start dressing for this century.

Kelly Osbourne - don't love it but at least she stands out and it's doing nice things for her figure

Maria Menounos - I absolutely love this dress on Maria but I would have loved it more without the 'prom' hair do.  Loose beach hair would have been fantastic.

Mila Kunis - channeling Black Swan in the hopes of another winning season?

Natalie Portman -  great to see her back on the red carpet in a delicious colour

Sarah Michelle Geller - I'm not sure what to say about this - the tie dye is at least interesting and the colour is great but maybe a little less fabric may have helped.

Michelle Williams - sorry I just don't like the dress, or the hair for that matter

Jessica Biel - with the body you have maybe you shouldn't hide it behind so much nana lace.

Madonna - I actually love this as it suits her style perfectly and her hair and make up are much less harsh than usual. My only complaint is the glove!

Nicole Kidman - svelte but may be time to find a new designer.  Might be nice to see her in a different style to mix it up.

Piper Perebo - she's down off the Coyote Bar and glamorous in nude - wondering though if it is a touch too long..

Melissa McCarthy -  rock'n the bubble fringe in a misguided attempt to inject a little 80's in to the proceedings

Tilda Swinton - not usually a fan of Tilda's fashion but I must admit this is a striking mix of eclectic and glamorous.  Well done.

Viggo Mortensen - You're a handsome man but you look like you're off to a business lunch

Sophia Vigara - WOW!!!  This is how a woman should dress - I bow down to you oh goddess.

Madeline Stowe - Another lady in blue with hair that could have done with a little more attention.  She needs to take tips from Sohia on how to wear this style.

Debra Messing - she must have seen photos of my Year 12 formal dress

Nicole Ritchie - don't love it but don't hate it either just make sure you don't trip over Nic.

Kate Beckinsale - I'm a bit sick of the pose but she always looks lovely.  Stylish in pale as pale.

Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt - Thank god you didn't wear black Ms Jolie.  It may not be my favourite but kudos for trying something different.  Brad it may just be time for a haircut before you tip over into mutton dressed up as lamb.

Amanda Peet - it is too easy to tease you about this dress but I still love you because you're Amanda Peet!

Channing Tatum/Jenna Dewan Tatum - Jenna love the colour, hate the dress.  Way too much tape needed to keep that puppy in place.  Chan - you are just The Chan and we love you.

Clare Danes - I like it - a little retro, a little rigid but a whole lot glamorous

Jessics Alba - not usually a fan of mauve but you look gorgeous in this colour.

Zooey Deschanel - I never thought I would have to say this but - bad hair Zooey!
Reece Witherspoon - you too Reece, what is with the big hair ladies?

Sarah Hyland - Gorgeous young lady with an innate style.  Looking forward to seeing her at more red carpet events.
