"Scientists (with one of the best jobs in the world) at the University of Aberdeen have spent their time studying the preferences of more than 4,500 women in their twenties, from 30 different countries.
Their results revealed that the modern day woman much prefers pretty boy looks to rugged macho men who were previously thought to be the dish of the day.
This means females are more inclined to fancy Pattinson, Zac Efron and boyband types, than actors like Sean Connery and Bruce Willis.
The reason for this shift in preference? Good health. The scientists discovered when health is poor, women want rugged men in the hope they will give them strong, healthy babies.
When things are on the up, disease rates are falling and general health standards improve, ladies prefer more gentle men with softer natures like R-Pattz and co.
The findings - part of ongoing University research into facial attractiveness and how people choose a mate - are published on Wednesday in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.
Dr Lisa DeBruine, who together with Dr Ben Jones heads the University's Face Research Lab, said: "We found that women from countries with poorer health, which have higher mortality and increased incidence of communicable disease, were more attracted to masculine faces than women living in countries with better health.
"People used to think beauty was arbitrary and that different cultures have different preferences.
"However our research shows that preferences may instead be explained by responses to different environmental factors like a low level of health in the population."
